The historic-home trap: hard mortar on soft brick

When those joints are repointed with modern hard Portland-cement mortar, the mortar becomes stronger than the brick. How to spot joints that need work

• Receding joints: mortar sits noticeably behind the face of the brick, or you can rake it out with a key.
• Crumbling or sandy mortar: it falls away as dust or grains when touched.

Tuckpointing vs. the alternatives

Tuckpointing (also called repointing) rakes out the failed mortar and replaces it with fresh, correctly matched mortar. It restores the wall and stops water intrusion without touching the brick. When brick faces themselves are spalled or broken, that calls for brick repair or replacement, and chimneys, which take weather on all sides, often need their own repair or rebuild.
