Why Lenexa brick needs attention

Lenexa has a long masonry history, going back to the limestone and brick buildings in Old Town along the Santa Fe Trail, and the older brick homes around the historic core carry mortar that has been weathering for generations. The mid-century ranches that filled in through the established neighborhoods are not far behind. Kansas City winters cross the freezing line over and over, sometimes several times in a single week. Repointing that matches

Tuckpointing means grinding out the failed mortar to a clean, sound depth and packing in fresh mortar that matches the original color and joint profile. Chimneys fail first

On most Lenexa homes the chimney goes before the walls do. It stands exposed on every side with little roof to shield it, so it takes weather from all directions and shows the damage first. Spalling brick, washed-out joints, a cracked crown, and a missing cap turn up at the top of the chimney while the walls still look fine.
